How to Op and De-Op Players in Vanilla Minecraft

In Minecraft, a server Operator (commonly known as an "Op") is a player who has access to admin-level commands. These commands can be used to manage the server, moderate players, and change game settings.

Giving a player Op status grants them significant power, so it should only be given to trusted users.

Making a Player an Operator (Op) 👑

You can grant a player Operator status using the /op command from in-game (if you are already an Op) or from the server console.

  • Command: /op <player>
  • <player>: The exact username of the player you want to make an Operator.

Example: To give the player Notch Operator status, you would type: /op Notch

The player will immediately receive Operator permissions.

Removing Operator Status (De-Op) 🚶

If you need to revoke a player's Operator permissions, you can use the /deop command.

  • Command: /deop <player>
  • <player>: The exact username of the player you want to remove from the Operator list.

Example: To remove Operator status from Notch, you would type: /deop Notch

The player will instantly lose their Operator commands and be reverted to a standard player.
